In the newspapers (see Media) you can find the occasional advertisement for a paying guest staying in a room with a family.

Aravali and international Aravali (both on JNU campus) and Gomti (Off campus - see above) guest houses can be booked by a current student for her/himself and/or friends/family: get a form in office behind Aravali and get it signed by a faculty member; you will have to pay Rs. 100 advance and charges for the entire period of booking when late or non-arrival - refund for cancellation up to 24hrs before arrival.

If you want to stay as a guest in a hostel, your host has to submit an application, get permission from the warden, deposit the guest charges (Rs.4/night) and get a receipt. Your period of stay can be extended by the warden. Illegal guests have to pay a Rs. 200 fine if caught (Rs. 500 if girls stay in boys’ rooms; you are evicted if caught 3 times hosting illegals, even in your absence).

You can eat in any mess of any hostel by purchasing a guest coupon per meal (breakfast / lunch / vegetarian / non-veg dinner) - 3 dinners per week are non-veg.
