• You may register yourself in your embassy (leave a xerox of your passport and flight ticket), so that they can reach you any time;

• The cultural attaché may help students with formalities during registration (JNU, ICCR, FRRO);

• The embassy can legalize documents, degrees, xeroxes of originals (+ their translation);

• Ask whether there are/were other students of your country in India and check their cases when facing problems during registration;

• When travelling in India: take your embassy’s telephone and fax number for when in trouble;

• Diplomats may assist in case of accidents;

• Victim of violence: medical and legal assistance, including how to file an FIR with the police and claim damages;

• Arrest/detention: diplomats can visit you in jail and see to it that you get a treatment no worse than the locals or than the international minimum norms, inform you of your rights and of addresses of lawyers, submit a request for pardon, and pass you money from relatives for fines or for bail;

• Embassies may assist in tracing a lost national;

• Death: assistance with funerals, cremation, repatriation of the corpse, death certificate;

• Embassies may get in touch with your relatives, employer, doctor etc. back home;

• Mention the embassy address to receive important letters (inform them beforehand);

• The diplomatic bag travels between capital and Delhi for official (and personal) correspondence;

• When your passport is expired, lost or stolen it can be replaced, or a laissez passer may be issued to leave India for your home country;

• To visit a foreign country you submit a visa application (open only till noon), ring the visa section to know what you need;

• Sometimes another embassy will need a recommendation from your embassy for a visa;

• About travel, vaccinations, custom regulations;

• Embassies may have (lists of) doctors, dentists, pharmacies, translators, travel agents etc.;

• Embassies may have books in their language(s);

• Embassies may organise language courses;

• Some embassies have a place of worship;

• Some embassies give loans to their nationals;

• Some embassies organise get togethers of residential nationals and/or issue newsletters;

• Embassies organise receptions and cultural events (exhibitions, films, music, dance etc.);

• Diplomats may be invited to lecture in JNU;

• Diplomats visit the VC for educational co-operation programmes and/or donations to JNU library;

• Embassies may offer (part-time) jobs/internships;

• You can get legally married at your embassy; and

• Embassies may have a swimming pool!
